Aveling & Porter of Rochester

Aveling & Porter of Rochester

Following Thomas Aveling’s success in adapting Clayton & Schuttleworth Portable Engines for self propulsion in 1858 he became widely regarded as the “Farther of the Traction Engine”. The company he founded displayed the famous rampant horse emblem and Invicta inscription on its products from 1864 and this is seen today on numerous preserved steam engines.
Although Thomas Aveling was responsible for many developments on the General Purpose Traction Engine, the company of Aveling & Porter are best known for their production of Steam Road Rollers. Being basically an adaptation of the company’s Traction Engine, no less than 8,600 rollers were built, around two thirds of the total number of steam engines constructed by them. Aveling & Porter were by far the largest manufacturer of road rollers in the UK and several examples are seen in this programme, along with Traction Engines, Road Locomotives and Steam Tractors produced at their Rochester works.
