Preserved Locomotives of the LMS

Preserved Locomotives of the LMS Upon the grouping of railways in 1923, the London Midland and Scottish Railway became the largest of the new “Big Four” railway companies. It absorbed a vast variety of locomotive classes, from the likes of the former Midland Railway and London and North Western Railway, into its fleet of motive power.
From 1923 up to nationalisation, in 1948, brand new classes of a broadly standardised nature were progressively introduced in an effort to replace work worn and often inadequate designs with locomotives better suited to operational needs.
Today several locomotives, that once plied their trade for the LMS, have survived. Many have run in today’s world of preservation and a selection of these are captured performing on the main line and on heritage lines around the UK.
Examples range from the Midland Railway “Jinty” 0-6-0 shunting engines through to the magnificent Pacifics designed by William Stanier for use on the West Coast Main Line
