The Settle & Carlisle Line Past & Present

The Settle & Carlisle Line Past & Present The Midland Railway opened the 72 miles of railway between Settle and Carlisle in 1875. The route includes some of the most rugged landscape crossed by any railway in Britain, with a string of impressive viaducts and tunnels enabling the line to cut through the harsh terrain and add to the spectacle that is the Settle and Carlisle Railway. This two disk set uses cine archive film and modern day footage to capture the atmosphere of a rail route that has become popular with rail travellers, photographers and enthusiasts. Disk One covers the line northwards to Ais Gill summit, whilst Disk Two takes a look at the northern section from Carlisle back to Ais Gill, thus taking advantage of the ruling gradients in order to show locomotivies working at their best. The changing look of this most scenic of English rail routes is captured, from the final days of steam through the era of diesel loco hauled trains to the modern units, which ferry passengers today. Steam hauled excursions are also seen as preserved locomotives have now regularly worked special trains over the route for almost four decades. Freight has always been a major part of the Settle and Carlisle Railway scene and traffic of this nature is also included with sequences of heavy coal trains hauled by the Class 66 diesel locomotives of today.
