The Steam Wagon

The Steam wagon

The general haulage of goods and commodities around the country was once carried out by horse and cart but the arrival of steam engines on the scene changed road transport for ever. Larger and heavier loads could now be more easily moved around than ever before and although the widespread use of steam engines was resisted at first their increased use became inevitable.
Large road locomotives handled often very heavy loads and steam tractors were developed to carry out smaller scale haulage. The tractor however required a towed trailer to carry out its duties so before long steam wagons were developed with an integral load bearing platform.
Several examples of steam wagon are seen in this programme, including those made by the two major British manufacturers, Foden and Sentinel.
Sentinel preferred what is referred to as the under-type design, whilst Foden were in favour of the alternative over-type arrangement and both these basic vehicle layouts are seen on the rally field and in action on the road.
